Focus Mitt Drills for Beginners: 5 Combos to Start With

Winning focus mitts for pad drills

Focus mitts build timing, accuracy and power like nothing else. Here are five beginner combos for partner pad work. Numbers follow the standard system: 1 jab, 2 cross, 3 lead hook, 4 rear hook, 5 lead uppercut, 6 rear uppercut.

The 5 combos

  1. 1-1-2: double jab, cross. Builds rhythm and range.
  2. 1-2-3: jab, cross, lead hook. The most used combination in boxing.
  3. 1-2-3-2: adds a cross at the end to finish strong.
  4. 2-3-2: cross, hook, cross. Teaches weight transfer.
  5. 1-2-5-2: jab, cross, lead uppercut, cross. Adds a level change.

How to structure a round

Work 3-minute rounds. Spend the first round on 1-2s, then call one combo per round and finish with 30 seconds of fast punches.

Tips for the pad holder

  • Meet the punch with slight resistance; do not slap at it.
  • Keep mitts at the height of the target: chin height for head shots.
  • Hold mitts close together so the boxer stays compact.
