How to Choose Winning Boxing Gloves: Weight, Closure and Fit

Winning boxing gloves buying guide

Winning gloves are a favorite in gyms because of their thick, layered padding and comfortable, glove-like fit. With dozens of colors, weights and closures to choose from, here is a simple way to pick the right pair.

1. Choose the right glove weight

Glove weight (in ounces) is the single most important choice. Heavier gloves carry more padding, which protects both you and your partner.

  • 8–10 oz: competition gloves and fast pad work for lighter boxers.
  • 12 oz: bag work and pads for most adults under 65 kg.
  • 14 oz: the all-rounder for training and light sparring.
  • 16 oz: the standard sparring weight for most adults.
  • 18 oz: heavyweights and boxers who want maximum protection.

If you only buy one pair and you spar, 16 oz is the safest choice.

2. Lace-up or hook-and-loop?

Lace-up gloves give the most secure, custom wrist fit and are preferred for sparring and fights, but you need a partner to tie them. Hook-and-loop (Velcro) gloves go on and off in seconds, which makes them ideal for classes, bag rounds and solo training. Read our full comparison: lace-up vs Velcro boxing gloves.

3. Check the fit with hand wraps on

Always try gloves with your hand wraps on. Your fingertips should touch the end of the glove without being cramped, your fist should close comfortably, and the cuff should feel firm around the wrist.

4. Pick your style

Solid classics, two-tone palms and metallic finishes all perform the same; choose what makes you want to train. You can also add a custom name print or embroidery to make the pair your own.
