Even the best groin protector only works when it fits and is looked after. Here are the mistakes we see most often and how to fix them.
Common fitting mistakes
- Wearing it too low: the top should reach around the navel, otherwise low shots land above the padding.
- Straps too loose: a guard that slides moves out of position just when you need it.
- Wrong size: too small leaves hips exposed; too big shifts when you pivot.
- Skipping it for light sparring: accidental low blows happen at any intensity.
How to clean a groin protector
- Wipe the inside with a damp cloth and mild soap after each session.
- Wipe the outside and straps.
- Let it air dry fully, away from direct heat.
- Store it open, not folded inside a closed bag.
When to replace it
Replace your guard when the foam feels flat, the shell is cracked, or straps no longer hold securely.
