How to Care for Your Boxing Set So It Lasts

Navy boxing set with gold trim

Quality boxing gear lasts a long time if you look after it. These habits take a minute after every session and add years to your set.

After every session

  • Air it out: open the gloves and loosen the headgear straps. Never leave gear zipped in a gym bag.
  • Wipe it down: use a damp cloth with a little mild soap on the outside, then dry with a towel.
  • Dry naturally: keep gear away from heaters, radiators and direct sun, which can crack leather and synthetic finishes.

Keep the inside fresh

  • Always wear hand wraps; they absorb most of the sweat.
  • Use glove deodorizers or cedar inserts between sessions.
  • Wipe the headgear lining, where sweat collects fastest.

Protect the finish

Metallic and bright two-tone finishes stay sharp longer if you store gear in a breathable bag and avoid stacking heavy items on top. A little leather conditioner every few months keeps leather pieces supple.

When to replace gear

Replace gloves when the padding feels flat or you can feel your knuckles on the bag. Replace headgear if the foam stays compressed or the straps no longer hold.
